Wigan Hilton on course for completion in 2027

Galliford Try has completed the structure of the 144-bedroom hotel, which is part of the wider Fettlers regeneration scheme being delivered by Cityheart.

Once complete, Wigan’s 62,000 sq ft Hampton by Hilton hotel will be the second element of the £135m Fettlers scheme to wrap up after the 75,000 sq ft market hall, which is due to open in spring 2027.

Fettlers is the name for the area previously occupied by the Galleries shopping centre and is Wigan’s flagship regeneration project.

All in all, the scheme will feature the hotel and market, a multi-use leisure hub, and 462 homes.

Designed by JM Architects, the hotel will feature a gym and will benefit from a newly created area of public realm on its doorstep. The asset will remain under council ownership and will be operated by Leaf Hospitality.

Cllr Dane Anderton, portfolio holder for economic development and regeneration, said: “It’s fantastic to see this landmark building taking shape and another key part of our vision for the town centre becoming a reality.

“The hotel will bring new jobs, attract visitors and investment, and help create a vibrant destination that residents can be proud of as the transformation of the town centre continues.”

Darren Jones, senior development director at Cityheart, said: “The topping out of Hampton by Hilton marks an important step in bringing Fettlers to life and helping to establish the town centre as a destination for business, leisure and investment.

“Alongside new homes, public spaces, and the Market Hall, the hotel demonstrates the scale of transformation now taking shape across the site. Seeing the building reach its full height gives a real sense of the neighbourhood that is beginning to emerge.”
