Tilbury Douglas in box seat for £45m Haigh Hall restoration
The contractor has been drafted in to take the transformation of Wigan Council’s grade two star-listed asset into a “nationally significant” cultural destination through pre-construction.
Tilbury Douglas will work alongside the Haigh Hall project team to develop the design and programme for the £45m project, undertake further surveys and planning, and come up with the best construction approach ahead of the main restoration works.
Situated within 250 acres of Haigh Woodland Park, around eight kilometres from Wigan town centre, the redevelopment of Haigh Hall would provide the following:
- An art gallery featuring a collection from local artist Theodore Major worth a reported £200m
- Workshop space
- Visitor shop
- Wedding and events space
- Café, bar, and restaurant facilities
- 10 bedrooms for event guests
- 430 more parking spaces
The scheme is being led by project manager Atkins Realis, with Purcell on board as the architect with Witherford Watson Mann. Cundall submitted the plans to Wigan Council. Others on the project team include Urban Green and Exterior Architecture.
The application can be viewed using the planning reference number A/25/099945/MAJOR on Wigan Council’s planning portal.
Kabir Salihi, regional director – North West at Tilbury Douglas, said: “We are proud to be working with Wigan Council on the next stage of the transformation of Haigh Hall.
“This is an important heritage project and we look forward to working collaboratively with the Council, design team and wider partners to develop the plans and help bring the vision for this remarkable building to life.”
He added: “We are also committed to ensuring the project delivers benefits beyond the restoration itself, creating opportunities for local people, developing skills and supporting businesses as work progresses.”
Peter Hughes, operations director at Haigh Hall said: “This is another hugely important milestone in our journey to breathe new life into Haigh Hall and secure its future for generations to come.
“Haigh Hall means so much to people across our borough, and the appointment of Tilbury Douglas takes us into the next crucial stage of this exciting transformation.
“Our ambitions for Haigh are about much more than restoring this magnificent building. We want to create a destination that the whole borough can be proud of, while making sure the investment creates real opportunities for local people through jobs, skills and wider opportunities.”
