Stockport on the hunt for team to map out delivery of new neighbourhood
Earmarked as a priority over the next five years, the 22 acres around Newbridge Lane dissected by the River Goyt is to be reinvented as a “family-friendly neighbourhood”.
Stockport Council wants to appoint a consultancy team to draw up a delivery strategy for the Newbridge Lane area, part of the Goyt Riverside section of the 4,000-home Town Centre East masterplan.
According to the strategic regeneration framework for the east of Stockport town centre, the Newbridge Lane area is earmarked for a mix of housing typologies as well as a “revitalised riverside”.
The area would deliver a “significant” proportion of the 4,000 homes Stockport is targeting in the east of the town centre in a “park setting”, according to tender documents.
The successful team will work with the council and its MDC to bring the vision of a “family friendly neighbourhood” to life, craft a plan to navigate viability and land ownership challenges in the area, and suggest viable ownership and delivery structures to bring schemes to fruition.
The swathe of land incorporates the Matalan store at the Peel Centre, an Aldi, and a Buzz Bingo, as well as areas of surface level car parking.
The River Goyt is seen as the anchor for the neighbourhood. Tender documents state that the river “will be central to the new neighbourhood’s identity…[and] is proposed to be integrated into the neighbourhood’s design through the creation of pedestrian and cycle pathways along the waterfront, improving connectivity and promoting sustainable transport options for residents and visitors alike”.

What about Stepping Hill hospital instead of building these houses. We need our hospital fixing . It’s disgraceful how you are spending all this money in Stockport town centre when our hospital is falling down
By Diana Mutch
@Diana Mutch You do understand that the people paying for private developments such as this are a completely different group of people to those who are responsible for fixing Stepping Hill? Here the Council are looking for a development partner for private developments, whereas the hospital is funded by Central Government. *shakes head*

Search up what they are doing on the old St Thomas’ hospital. They are building an intermediate care building to ease the pressure on stepping Hill which nobody else is doing so credit where credits due

@Diana Mutch – to add to what others have already said: building new homes, wherever, contributes to economic growth (more people spending money in local businesses, more people employed and producing things in the local economy etc); economic growth results in increased tax returns; increased tax returns means more money for the government to spend on improving things like hospitals. It’s basis economics, not rocket science.

Well, the artists impression look beautiful. I doubt the end result will be as pretty. I love the way artists impressions show sunlit days with happy families and thoughtful planting. The reality is often quite the opposite.

Meanwhile the old Sainsbury’s store is an eyesore as is the decaying out of date ASDA store. As the entrance to Stockport from the east it is in dire need of re- development !

@Steve Cooper The old Sainsburys site has planning permission and the developers have announced their intention to make a start on site this year. https://www.placenorthwest.co.uk/amstones-150m-stockport-resi-due-to-start-this-year/
There is a recently adopted strategic regeneration framework for the whole of the town centre east area – this article is about the first scheme coming forward under that, the ASDA site is identified as another future scheme but won’t be nearly as straightforward, not least because it has an active retail use on it.

Why not try and build another Bramhall or Poynton, why build high-rise? No one prefers to live in high rise? Who are all the homes for considering indigenous birthrates are falling?
I dare someone to actually answer my questions 🙂

You should not rebuild on previously flooded or near possible flood plains areas thought you knew that, too many dangers plz rethink totally

I live in lower Bredbury in a terraced house the house next door has been bought by person from London and they are making it into a 6 bedroom flats with separate kitchen. It’s a nightmare no one to listen to your complaints now I see they are building all these home just down the road. The house next door is a family home I should say was now it’s flats. How would the new landlord like it if it was on his door step. No one cares about nabours on both sides.

Why get rid of Matalan and Aldi? Why not use the old Sainsburys and derelict land along Portwood? That would make a lot more sense. Does anyone in Stockport council actually have a brain cell?
