Conwy seeking developer for site of brutalist civic hall

After plans to transform the site into a hospitality scheme fell through, the county council is looking to dispose of the asset, which sits within the town’s UNESCO World Heritage zone.

Conwy County Council approved plans for the redevelopment of the grade two-listed, 12,000 sq ft Conwy Civic Hall in 2024. The plans would have seen the 1960s brutalist box demolished and replaced with an aparthotel and food hall.

However, developer Nautical Point is understood to be longer involved in the scheme.

This has prompted the council to go back to the drawing board and offer the building and adjoining land up to a developer. A target of early 2028 has been set for the submission of a planning application.

A brochure for the opportunity suggests that any redevelopment proposals should be based around tourism, the town’s main economic driver.

It states: “The nature of any future redevelopment of the site is a major consideration from the perspective of both the key economic drivers for the town but also the sensitivity and quality of design required in the context of the site’s prominent location.”

The council was contacted for comment.

Conwy Civic Hall was last used as a library and a 240-capacity theatre. The theatre shut in 2014, while the ground-floor library shuttered in 2019.
