Last phase of Salboy’s Castle Irwell resi approved
The £120m redevelopment of the former Salford student campus will draw to a close with a third phase of 104 houses.
Originally, 237 apartments were plotted for this phase, before a change of tack earlier this year.
With Salboy’s sister company Domis Construction having completed a 157-home first phase and nearing completion of the 106-home phase two, the final tally of homes at the 36-acre site will be 367, comfortably inside the 500 homes given outline consent.
The initial plan had been for phase three to feature seven apartment blocks, but this was changed after consulting with local stakeholders.
Designed by Calderpeel Architects, Castle Irwell is being developed on the site of the former Manchester Racecourse. The site is bordered by Littleton Road and Cromwell Road and abuts the £10m Second Salford Flood Basin.
The site was more recently occupied by the University of Salford’s Castle Irwell student village, which closed in 2015.
