Warrington sets out next steps for 4,200-home extension
Majority landowner Homes England will seek to appoint a private sector partner as master developer for the 610-acre scheme but construction will not commence until 2019 “at the earliest”.
Next week, Warrington Council is expected to progress the South East Warrington extension, which proposes 4,200 homes and accompanying infrastructure. by adopting a development framework for the site.
Homes England owns 98% of the 610-acre allocation after wrapping up a deal for a significant chunk last year. The remaining 2% of developable land, located in Stretton, remains in private ownership. The entire site is allocated for development in Warrington’s local plan.
As well as thousands of homes – 2,400 of which are expected to be delivered before 2040 – the urban extension is expected to feature two primary schools, a four-form entry secondary school, shops, an expanded Appleton GP surgery, and leisure facilities.
A report to Warrington Council’s cabinet states that “an experienced private sector master developer” is likely to be appointed to spearhead the scheme.
A petition opposing the development, which stretches from Grappenhall to Stretton, garnered nearly 2,000 signatures.
WSP, SLR, Meeting Place, Savills, Real Worth, and Lees Roxburgh were involved in the making of the development framework for the urban extension.
