Bridges to succeed Craig as Manchester Leader
Cllr Garry Bridges has been elected as the new leader of the city’s Labour Group and will formally take up the city council’s top job tomorrow.
Bridges, who is a councillor for Old Moat ward, prevailed over Clayton and Openshaw councillor Thomas Robinson, who is the executive member for adult social care and health, and Cllr Munaver Rasul, who is a councillor in Baguley.
Bridges will replace Bev Craig as Leader of Manchester City Council, having previously been her deputy. Craig stood down as Leader after five years when she was elected as Mayor of Greater Manchester, replacing now-Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
A by-election for Craig’s former Burnage seat will take place on Thursday 10 September. Bridges has been interim leader since Craig departed.
He works in education secretary and Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell’s parliamentary office, according to his register of interests.
