Morgan Sindall lands £35m Sellafield job

The partnerships, fit-out, and construction services group’s infrastructure division has secured a project to replace more than 300,000 sq ft of roofing across two buildings at the Cumbrian nuclear processing site.

A notice was published at the end of last week recording MS’s securing of the work, which will see roofs across Sellafield’s fuel handling plant and site ion exchange effluent plant building replaced. The total area is equivalent to five acres.

As set out in that notice, the business need for the project is to support the ongoing safety of personnel and operating systems until 2060 to 2070.

The contract expands the Morgan Sindall Infrastructure nuclear business’s portfolio of work at the Sellafield site beyond the Infrastructure Strategic Alliance, Programme & Project Partners, and Infrastructure Delivery Partnership frameworks.

Morgan Sindall was the only bidder for the project, which was procured through Pagabo’s major works framework.

The site ion exchange effluent plant building – SIXEP – is a wastewater treatment facility for the 655-acre site, which encompasses more than 1,000 buildings in all, 200 of them directly nuclear-related. The building is now 41 years old.

Having ceased operations as a power station in the early 2000s, Sellafield is now mostly concerned with nuclear waste processing and storage, and nuclear decommissioning.
