Westmorland grants Kendal go-ahead
Four years on from submission, outline plans for 160 homes off Hayclose Road have approval.
Applicant Alan Ball submitted outline plans for the 19-cre site in 2022, with 35% of the homes on site to be affordable.
The verdict was handed down by Westmorland & Furness Council’s strategic planning committee at its Thursday 17 September meeting, with no votes against but several abstentions.
Officers had recommended approval for the project, but the town council maintained its opposition to the proposals, objecting for various reasons including impact on highways and NHS services.
Illustrative plans, drawn up by Design by Pod, include a mix of homes from apartments and terraced houses to semi-detached and detached dwellings. Sizes will range from one to four bedrooms.
The site is in the south of Kendal, close to Oxenholme station, a factor carrying significant weight under the updated NPPF which calls for a “default yes” for schemes close to railway stations.
Planning consultancy MWT advised the applicant. Director Harry Tonge said: “After four years of hard work, we’re glad to finally have a resolution from committee to approve the application, so the site can be brought to the market and much needed homes can be delivered.”
