Harcourt heads for Q4 completion for Stanley Dock restaurant

Having invested £1.5m in the conversion and extension of the Pumphouse building, the owner of Liverpool’s Titanic Hotel has named the incoming pizzeria 1848, in honour of the year the dock opened.

The grade two-listed Hydraulic Pumphouse and Accumulator Tower is currently being transformed into a 120-seat pizzeria, henceforth known as 1848 Stanley Dock.

Operated by Titanic Hotel Liverpool and owned by Harcourt Developments, the 4,400 sq ft restaurant will bring a new dining destination to the northern end of the city’s waterfront.

The development team said that the new restaurant will combine the character of the original Victorian pumphouse with contemporary design, with a glass-walled extension with 18.5 ft-tall ceilings overlooking the dock, with glazed doors opening to a waterfront dining terrace.

Connecting the extension with the original brick boiler room will be a 23ft-high atrium, creating a central space for dining and a cocktail bar. A new galleried mezzanine will add further seating, with the spaces set to include a private dining area and lounge space.

Brian Connor, Titanic Hotel Liverpool general manager, says “1848 is an exciting addition to Stanley Dock and provides an opportunity to give another one of the site’s historic buildings a new lease of life.”

Stanley Dock was officially opened by Jesse Hartley in 1848, with the pumphouse added shortly after in 1855, housing the hydraulic pumping systems that powered the dock gates, capstans, cargo cranes and tobacco presses across both the North and South Warehouses for decades.

Stanley Dock closed in 1985. Harcourt Developments bought the site in 2010. Having completed phase one of its Tobacco Warehouse redevelopment in 2022, it last year bought the nearby Bonded Tea Warehouse from Urban Splash.

Connor added: “The venue has such a distinctive character, and as with Titanic Hotel, retaining its original features while creating a contemporary space has been a key priority throughout the redevelopment. We’re looking forward to welcoming guests to 1848 Stanley Dock later this year, and introducing a new dining experience to Liverpool.”
