Anchor Matalan store confirmed for Preston

InfraRed Capital Partners and asset manager Sovereign Centros have agreed a 26,000 sq ft letting to Matalan at St George’s Shopping Centre in Preston.

The store will merge nine units and become the new anchor tenant for the 284,000 sq ft shopping centre.

St George’s is located between Preston’s two main shopping streets, Fishergate and Friargate. The centre has a 400-space multi-storey car park accessed from Lune Street and includes tenants Costa Coffee, H&M, M&S, New Look, and River Island.

InfraRed is currently on site at the centre building a 32,000 sq ft restaurant quarter at the shopping centre, made up of units. The development has received planning permission and construction has commenced.

Keith Butcher, director of real estate at InfaRed Capital Partners, said: “Matalan is a great family brand, with 230 UK stores and 30 international franchise stores, plus a growing online channel. This store will complement our existing tenant mix and represents a major step forward in the ongoing strategy to increase the fashion and homeware offer at the centre.”

Metis Real Estate Advisors and Barker Proudlove acted for InfraRed Capital Partners. Matalan is due to open in the autumn.

A welcome addition to Preston offering outlet style shopping in a sustainable, city centre location. One wonders whether the Bamber Bridge store would come up for closure, which is very much in the 90s/00s style of out-of-town department store with a huge lot out front. They’ve had a recent refurb though which indicates that store will be holding strong too.

I agree with the comment below. Come on Preston, lets see you do it like they do on the discovery channel!
