GMI inks Manchester Premier Inn deal

Whitbread, which owns the chain, has appointed the contractor to build a 229-bedroom hotel off Rochdale Road.

GMI Construction is expected to start work on the 10-storey Premier Inn this autumn. Completion of the project is scheduled for autumn 2026.

Whitbread acquired the site from Premcor earlier this year. Once open, the site will be the seventh Premier Inn in central Manchester and one of its largest in the city.

Will Steward, project and programme manager for Whitbread, said: “Whitbread acquired the Rochdale Road development site in February 2024 with the premise of bringing about a speedy transformation of the location into the latest format Premier Inn hotel.

“Appointing GMI as principal contractor continues this positive momentum, and we hope to break ground and start building our latest Manchester hotel this autumn.”

GMI and Whitbread have worked together before. The contractor recently completed a 71-bedroom Premier Inn in Keswick.

“It is brilliant to see our partnership go from strength to strength,” said Anthony Judge, regional director for GMI Construction.

“This latest development in the iconic Northern Quarter of Manchester will be a striking new addition to the skyline with its remarkable brickwork façade. We are delighted to be a part of this major project and greatly look forward to progressing with this scheme.”

What a horrible oppressive building on a gateway site. Manchester is looking haggard.

They have a blank canvas on Rochdale Road and this is the best they can do? It looks like something in Crewe.

“remarkable brickwork facade”

Really terrible design. Manchester architects should just give up and hand all work to Tim Groom if this is the best they’re going to come up with

No it doesn’t.

Even Crewe would reject this slab

Not enough creativity. Manchester needs more organic more curvaceous designed buildings. I find Manchester a little depressing. Ugly biscuit boxes everywhere. The City is becoming a bedsit for students. Not enough diversity.

It doesn’t matter, all that matters is that Manchester builds more buildings than anywhere outside of London, check out the crane count

This building will destroy my life.

Another hotel that looks just like a stereotypical hotel …

Such a shame too see another soulless building added to Angel Meadows. I hope the churches right to light order comes into effect so it’s not completely shadowed
