Glencar to build Extra MSA’s M62 services

The contractor has been appointed to deliver the 44,000 sq ft facilities building and a 100-bed hotel, located on 38 acres off Junction 11 in Warrington.

Extra MSA Group, which develops and operates motorway services, won consent for the Green Belt project in 2022 following an appeal.

Glencar is expected to break ground in the new year.

The proposed services will be Extra’s second site in the North West, after Blackburn with Darwen services on the M65.

Extra has previously argued the proposals would improve road safety by meeting a gap in service provision along the motorway; under government guidelines, service areas are required to be less than 30 minutes’ drive, and no more than 28 miles apart.

Glencar’s appointment also coincides with the appointment of Bethell Construction to deliver a package of highway improvement works at Junction 11.

The project team includes architect Corstorphine & Wright, ecological and landscape consultant, Smeeden Foreman, quantity surveyor, CSA, and project manager, Mascot Management.

SLR, Hexa, Ramboll, and Social are also advising.

Tom Dobson, chief executive at Extra MSA, said: “We’re delighted to be moving towards a start on site for this fantastic development.

“Warrington MSA represents a major investment in local infrastructure and will bring significant economic, safety and community benefits to the area. We’re proud to be working with Glencar and all our wider project partners to bring this scheme to life.”

Tom Kearsley, North regional director at Glencar, added: “It’s fantastic to be appointed on this transformational project, building on our existing track record of delivering major infrastructure projects across the North West and beyond.

“We look forward to working closely with Extra MSA and the wider team to deliver a high-quality facility that provides lasting value for Warrington and the surrounding communities.”
