AOC Architecture appointed to lead Venue Cymru revamp

The London-based outfit has been selected to design a culture hub at the Llandudno events facility.

AOC Architecture was one of 23 bidders for the £2.4m contract to lead a team to deliver designs for the evolution of Venue Cymru.

Sarah Ecob, head of economy and culture at Conwy County Council said: “The number of high-quality submissions we had for this tender was incredible. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who put in a bid.

“AOC Architecture impressed us with their approach and understanding of projects such as ours. We’re delighted to be working with them and excited to see their designs take shape as the project moves forward.”

The project brief said that the primary scope elements for the design team will be a new Culture Hub as an extension to the existing foyer, various refurbishment works in and around existing foyers, and refurbishment of the existing auditorium including replacement of seating and ventilation improvements.

Backed by the government to the tune of £10m, The Office for Wales said last year that investment in Venue Cymru will “deliver a step-change in the use of the building, including the relocation of the existing library and Tourist Information Centre to create a modern and innovative cultural hub”.

AOC Architecture, headed up by Tom Coward, Gill Lambert and Geoff Shearcroft, has extensive experience delivering similar schemes.

The firm was selected in 2024 to design a new home for the Royal Academy of Music in Newham and is also leading on the redesign of Paignton Picture House in Devon.

Tom Coward, director at AOC Architecture, said: “We are thrilled to have been appointed to help transform Venue Cymru in Llandudno.

“This project offers an exciting opportunity to create culturally significant spaces that will benefit North Wales for generations. We look forward to working closely with the entire team to deliver a venue that the whole community can be proud of.”
