Work to begin on 65-home Wigan affordable scheme next month

Following planning approval, Stonebond and Great Places Housing Group are eyeing a swift start on site.

The 65-home development is located on Wigan Council’s former Christopher Street Depot in Ince.

The scheme is 100% affordable and is part of an ongoing partnership between Stonebond and Great Places set up in 2023 to deliver 600 homes across Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

The Christopher Street scheme, which is supported by Homes England grant, is located close to another of the partnership’s developments, the 106-home Willowbrook Fields that is currently under construction.

Mark Russell, managing director of Stonebond Manchester, said: “We’re pleased to move forward with these plans at Christopher Street, a long-standing vacant site which, when combined with the already successful delivery of Willowbrook Fields next door, means we’re delivering more than 170 new affordable homes of mixed tenure here in Wigan.”

Nick Gornall, director of development at Great Places, added: “By unlocking this long-standing brownfield site alongside the delivery of Willowbrook Fields next door, we’re helping to create a larger, joined up neighbourhood that will provide high quality homes for local people.

“Schemes like this show what partnership working can achieve – improving local affordability, unlocking brownfield sites and supporting the long-term regeneration of the area.”

There is far too many new properties in one area ..placing strain on infrastructure in both Ince and Hindley!!! Also the brown space in that area helped wildlife … Much loss of habitat. Selfish money making developers!
