Consultation underway for 43 canal-side Lancaster homes

Kendal-based South Lakes Housing and contractor R P Tyson are seeking local opinions for the £10m development at the heart of the Lancaster Canal Quarter project.

Designed by David Cox Architects, the 43-home Nelson Street development comprises three-storey townhouses and apartments overlooking the Lancaster Canal.

The scheme will provide affordable housing on the site of a former city council car park in the city centre.

Apartments would be spread across three blocks, while a single plot would be reserved for townhouses.

Nelson Street would support Lancaster City Council’s Canal Quarter masterplan, which aims to connect the city centre and the canal, improve public space, and upgrade sustainable travel links.

Designed by PRP Architects, the masterplan covers six acres of Lancaster’s centre, proposing around 580 homes and some 75,300 sq ft of non-residential space.

Deborah Smith, owner of S&L Planning Consultants, said: “The Nelson Street development in the heart of the Canal Quarter will deliver a high-quality housing scheme that will provide much-needed social housing.

“It also resonates with the objective of the Council’s Canal Quarter masterplan to create a vibrant new neighbourhood.

“We look forward to consulting on the project and welcome the local community’s input.”

South Lakes Housing was chosen as the preferred developer by Lancaster City Council after a tender process ended last year.
