Wain Estates ramps up plans for 100-acre Swinton neighbourhood
The former Swinton Park Golf Club off the East Lancs Road could be redeveloped into 700 homes under plans worked up by the land promoter, which acquired the site nine years ago.
Wain Estates has launched a public consultation on its proposals for the redevelopment of the 100-acre site, which ceased operating as a golf club in 2020.
Proposals to build on the site have proved controversial since they were first conceived several years ago. Both Bellway and Your Housing Group have expressed an interest in acquiring the plot for redevelopment in the past but local opposition has prevented a deal going through.
After YHG pulled out of a deal to buy the site in 2020, Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett welcomed the move – which came following a council-commissioned study that found the site could still viably operate as a golf club – and urged Wain Estates to sell the site to a party who would reopen it as a golf course.
However, Wain Estates is now forging ahead with its housing plan, drawing up an outline application that it expects to submit to Salford City Council for consideration this year.
The landowner claims the site is well placed to meet Salford’s housing needs and that there are “23 golf courses within 20 minutes’ drive of the site”.
As well as homes, some of which will be affordable, Wain Estates’ plans feature sport and recreational facilities, a convenience store, mobility hub and an extra care facility. Ample public open space is planned at the site, which is not currently accessible to the public.
