Barrow’s Majestic Hotel primed for overhaul

Ashall Projects has applied for planning permission to upgrade the 41-room Duke Street asset following a period of vacancy.

Barrow’s Majestic Hotel requires window repairs and internal refurbishment to bring it up to spec. IHG is lined up to operate the asset under its Garner banner.

Designed by Franklin Ellis Architects, the scheme will complement the Holiday Inn, located opposite and trading since 2019, and offer options for longer term stays by providing some rooms with kitchenettes, according to planning documents.

A landmark in Barrow, the building is grade two-listed and was constructed in the early 1900s. It ceased trading as a hotel two years ago due to its deteriorating condition and was acquired by Ashall earlier this year.

The redevelopment of the hotel becomes the latest project within the wider regeneration of the Cumbrian town. Others include Muse’s Marina Village and Heart of Barrow, both of which are being spearheaded by Team Barrow, a partnership between Westmorland & Furness Council, BAE Systems and central government.
