Blackburn progresses 1,250-home development plan

The council is consulting with the public for a second time on a 20-year plan to deliver housing on 250 acres off Brownhill Drive north-east of the town centre.

Blackburn with Darwen Council consulted on a masterplan for the site, allocated for 1,500 homes in its local plan, last year.

Since then, the masterplan has been refined, and the authority now proposes the construction of up to 1,250 homes on the site.

As well as houses and apartments, the project will feature the retention of listed buildings and a playing field, as well as a local community hub featuring a health centre.

A consultation on the updated masterplan and design code – which splits the site into three character areas – is now live and will run until 9 June.

The land, north of Whitebirk Industrial Estate, is in multiple ownership and the council owns around 45%.

Stantec is leading on the creation of the masterplan and design code.

This is a very ambitious council with a local plan that emphasises growth in housing and employment Most weeks we have we hear of a new development . Hopefully this attitude can be taken into the new local authority when the cumbersome county council is abolished
