Skem’s Stormy Corner set for industrial future

The six-acre site off Selby Place, which encompasses the former home of Skelmersdale United FC, could be redeveloped into a storage and distribution hub spanning 110,200 sq ft.

Plans submitted to West Lancashire Council by Marshall CDP seek permission to regenerate the brownfield site, which had hosted Stormy Corner – a football pitch and a 500-capacity stand.

The plot was home to the 143-year-old non-league team between 2004 and 2016 before an abrupt end to their lease forced the club into a ground-share arrangement with nearby Prescot Cables FC, the first of several ground shares with rival clubs.

Having stood empty for seven years, the vacant site was allocated under the West Lancashire Local Plan for employment purposes.

A design and access statement includes 5,200 sq ft first-floor open-plan office space, with the external area around the shed equating to 112,700 sq ft.

Stanley Industrial Estate benefits from accessibility to major transport infrastructure, including the A577, which runs to the south of the area.

Parking for 102 cars would be provided in front of the north-facing shed sitting on the site’s south side.

The project team includes Cundall, Smeeden Foreman, Erap, Red Six Partnership, Booth King, Avison Young, CDP, ENS, and Cora IHT.

Those interested in the application can view it using the planning reference number 2025/0362/FUL on West Lancashire Council’s planning portal.
