Maggie’s Manchester wins GM Building of the Year

The Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce Building of the Year Award 2016 has been awarded to Maggie’s Manchester, a cancer support centre at The Christie hospital.

Maggie’s Manchester, designed by Foster + Partners, saw off stiff competition from three other finalists: Ashton Old Baths in Tameside, King Street Townhouse in Manchester and One New Bailey in Salford.

The announcement was made last night at the Chamber’s Property and Construction Annual Dinner by Baroness Beverley Hughes of Stretford. The award was sponsored by Skanska and the winner chosen by the Chamber’s 18-strong property and construction committee. Over 350 businesses attended the event.

Steve Burne, chairman of the committee and managing director of AEW Architects, said: “This is an example of how design should be approached. The architects and team have created a beautiful space which takes the emphasis away from clinical care, but provides a warm environment for a very important function in the care process.

“Whether the judges were taken with the design, the social impact of its use, its construction techniques or its community value, is not really measurable; It is a worthy winner.”

The event also witnessed the Construction Apprentice of the Year Award, sponsored by SI Sealy, presented to Liam Redwood, who is completing a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Construction Operations and Civil Engineering at Carillion Morgan Sindall.
