International landscape competition launches in Lancashire

An international landscape architecture design competition is being launched next month, targeted at creating inspirational public spaces at six town centres in Lancashire.

The Pennine Lancashire Squared competition aims to find the best landscape architects and public realm designers, from across the world, to create outstanding high profile spaces in Burnley, Accrington, Blackburn, Bacup, Clitheroe and Nelson.

The competition is being co-ordinated by regeneration agency Elevate on behalf of Pennine Lancashire, with over 300 design practices already interested.

Yvette Livesey and her late partner Tony Wilson came up with the idea, proposing the competition as a means of attracting talent to the area, raising its profile and creating outstanding public spaces in each town.

The Landscape Institute, the professional body representing landscape architects, is running the competition, with the endorsement of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

The North West Development Agency provided funding for the competition, which has been implemented by the boroughs of Blackburn with Darwen, Burnley, Hyndburn, Pendle, Ribble Valley and Rossendale, with support from Lancashire County Council.

The launch, taking place in Market Street in Nelson, Lancashire, will feature Steve Broomhead, chief executive of the NWDA, as a guest speaker, together with the chair of the judging panel – internationally acclaimed architect Stephen Hodder MBE.

The launch will take place Friday 15 August from 12.45pm.
