New £2m Northwich Market lined up for summer opening
Contractor Medlock is fitting out an 8,600 sq ft corner unit at Barons Quay to become the trading hall’s future home, replacing its existing location at Weaver Square.
The current Northwich Market dates to the 1960s and will remain open until its new location opens in the summer. Its replacement has been designed by AHR and will offer space for 23 traders to hawk their wares as well as for 160 diners through a mix of internal and exterior seating.
Moving the market is part of Cheshire West and Chester Council’s wider strategy to regenerate the town centre, with its existing Weaver Square location lined up for housing under plans being worked up by the council and its partners VINCI and Ion Developments.
Cheshire West and Chester Council said the new market project represents a £1.8m investment.
“We are really looking forward to creating a wonderful new market in the heart of Northwich and bring this once empty unit to life,” said Will Earl, pre-construction director at Medlock.
“Our team are raring to go and ready to deliver a great job for the council.”
CWAC Cllr Nathan Pardoe, cabinet member for inclusive economy, regeneration, and digital transformation, described the project as “the biggest investment in Northwich Market since the 1960s.”
He added later: “At a time when other councils are closing or withdrawing from markets, Cheshire West and Chester Council remains committed to its markets – in Northwich and across the borough.”
Michael Dunn, associate and project lead at AHR, stated: “We’re thrilled that the Northwich Market development is now under construction, and look forward to seeing the vibrancy it will bring to the Barons Quay development.”
In addition to AHR and Medlock, the project team includes project manager SDA Consulting, civils engineer Curtins, and MEP engineer CWC.
Elsewhere in Cheshire West, the council has been delivering a revamp of Ellesmere Port Market. The first phase of the refurbishment project completed last month. The market project is set to complete in its entirety in late summer.
