GMP HQ demolition kicks off

With a planning application expected this summer for a 1,200-home neighbourhood, PP O’Connor has started to bring down buildings at Greater Manchester Police’s former base in Old Trafford.

A second round of consultation was triggered early in March for the project, which is to be delivered by FEC in partnership with Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Trafford Council.

The Chester House site is located off Boyer Street and White City Way, and is expected to see 1,200 homes delivered along with a hotel and a mix of commercial and community spaces. A target of 25% affordable homes has been named for a project involving 3DReid, Re-form and Asteer.

Heritage features will be retained, while the site will have capacity to accommodate services such as a GP surgery as local needs evolve.

Cllr Liz Patel, Trafford Council’s executive member for economy and regeneration, said: “I am delighted that demolition work has started on this important site. This scheme, if awarded planning permission, will result in 1,200 homes including affordable on a brownfield site.

“It supports Trafford Council’s priorities regarding new and affordable housing for the borough. The public realm, commercial space and the heat network aspects of the scheme are also great news as well as the 500 new jobs.”

Consultation on the development is open until 6 April.
