Completion for Whitehaven public space revamp

The refurbished Green Market and Duke Street are officially open for business after a 13-week programme led by contractor Thomas Armstrong.

Forming part of Cumberland Council’s public realm improvement plan, the scheme represents a £450,000 investment, with funding coming from Sellafield Ltd, the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, and the local authority itself.

The headline aim of the project was to make these central spaces more attractive, accessible, and welcoming for everyone.

In a scheme designed by Align Property Partners, improvements include new seating, fresh planting, and upgraded litter bins.

Standout features include the addition of historical interpretation boards detailing the stories of Green Market and the Market Hall, as well as two commemorative stones created by the Whitehaven Heritage Action Group.

Leader of Cumberland Council, Cllr Mark Fryer, said: “This was an exciting step forward for Whitehaven. By enhancing the public realm and preserving the area’s proud history, we have not just invested in infrastructure; we have invested in people, place, and pride.”
