Aldi seeks Menai Bridge success
Plans have been lodged with Isle of Anglesey Council for a 19,000 sq ft foodstore at the Four Crosses roundabout.
Aldi is working with regular partners Avison Young and The Harris Partnership on the project.
The development is proposed on land bounded by Ffordd Penymynydd and A5025 in Menai Bridge.
Aldi’s site has been used for agriculture down the years. A resolution to grant permission for a park & ride facility associated with Hitachi’s Wylfa power station project was given in 2019, although a decision notice was never issued, with the Japanese giant eventually withdrawing its £20bn scheme.
The site is surrounded by farmland, and is adjacent to local businesses, including the Four Crosses pub. There are residential areas east and south-east of the site, with the Ysgol David Hughes school and leisure centre around half a mile away.
Now operating more than 1,000 stores across the UK, Aldi has 66 locations in Wales, 24 of them in North Wales. It has stores in Bangor, Llangefni, Holyhead and Pwllheli.
Setting out the case for development in its planning & retail assessment statement, Avison Young said: “Aldi has no representation within Menai Bridge, and there is therefore an opportunity for a new store to benefit the local area and provide residents with a better, affordable shopping experience.
“The application scheme also has the potential to claw back expenditure that currently leaks from Menai Bridge residents to, amongst other destinations, the existing Aldis at Caernarfon Road in Bangor and at Mill Street in Llangefni.
“The significant investment proposed in the application will see this site developed to provide a modern discount foodstore which is proportionate to the needs of Menai Bridge and surrounding settlements.”
Furthermore, said the consultancy, the scheme is “eminently deliverable,” with Aldi targeting construction within 18 months of obtaining planning permission.
Aldi secured permission late in 2025 for a store in Lancaster, and has this year put in plans in Liverpool, Seacombe on the Wirral, and in Hazel Grove, Stockport.
