Southport Cloisters set for £1m refurb

Offices4u, a letting agent and investor, plans to refurbish the 6,000 sq ft Cloisters for its tenant, IT services provider, Techedia, having bought the building in August.

Both Offices4u and Techedia are owned by director Matthew Townson and Techedia is relocating to the Cloisters building on Corporation Street from Burlington House in Crosby, as part of growth strategy.

Under the plans submitted to Sefton Council, the building, which is split into two units, will be refurbished to provide grade A office space. The property was previously occupied by a sports shop but has been vacant for the last three years.

The £1m refurb is being designed by Liverpool-based architect Studio RBA.

On completion of the project, due to start early next year, Techedia will take one half of the building and a health and wellbeing centre will be created in the other.

The two-storey building is a former Victorian school and has a large rooftop terrace that was once a playground.

Townson, who is from Southport, hopes to more than double the size of Techedia and create around 75 jobs, recruiting from the town’s schools and colleges.

He said: “As a proud Sandgrounder, I’m grateful for the opportunity to bring such an important building in the town back to life after being empty for three years.

“We’re keen to attract local people to work in the building and perhaps more importantly retain that talent, which in the past has moved elsewhere, as well as help fuel the local economy.”
