Aldi lines up Wirral, Liverpool sites
The ever-ambitious grocery group wants to open a food store at a brownfield site off Birkenhead Road in Seacombe and at the Buzz Bingo site at Wavertree Retail Park.
Consultations have begun for both sites, with the Liverpool store one to complete on 11 May and the Seacombe store to conclude a few days later on 13 May.
Aldi Wavertree
First up is the Wavertree Retail Park site in Liverpool. Aldi has put forward proposals for a 14,800 sq ft facility on the site of the Buzz Bingo. Designed by The Harris Partnership, the store would include air source heat pumps, LED lighting, and solar panels on its roof.
Aldi said that it would create 40 jobs through the store, which would act as an £7m investment into the area.
Parking at the store would be shared with the nearby Matalan, with a total of 197 bays available.
Aldi Seacombe
Located at that highway’s junction with Kelvin Road, the site for the proposed newest Wirral Aldi location is described as vacant, although it is housing lorry parking for now. It has as housed a number of uses over the years including a timber yard and pallet centre.
Aldi said that at present, its nearest store to the plot is nearly two miles away, in Birkenhead.
The group said that a new Aldi food store here would “significantly improve shopping options for local residents”. The new store would also create 40 full-time jobs.
An access to the site would be provided off Birkenhead Road, to the north of the site. An additional pedestrian link will be available via Birkenhead Road to the west of the main entrance point.
Stephen Jones, real estate manager for Aldi, said: “We’re delighted to announce our plans for a new food store at this site in Seacombe.
“Having been vacant for over a decade, we’re excited to be bringing forward plans that would regenerate this strategic site, setting new standards for development in this part of Seacombe. We’d like to encourage the community to have their say by providing their feedback via our consultation website.”

Regarding the Aldi in Seacombe, you wait for one supermarket to arrive and then suddenly 2 appear in that area. Sainsbury’s have just started work on their new store at the junction of Dock Rd and Duke St. Now Aldi look like they’ll be building theirs at the other end of Dock Rd, near the Bascule bridge. These will be welcomed both by nearby residents and those who work in the area, the latter being close to Stena’s Belfast/Dublin ferry terminal.

An Aldi store in Seacombe will be great as there is very little around the area and with Millers Quay just along the road the addition will really boost regeneration of the old industrial area. I know there are plans for a Sainsbury’s but as that will be a convenience store prices will be at least 10% higher than a regular store.

Definitely what is needed. Aldi is very popular and Seacombe needs more shops and amenities. Brilliant location also.
