Wirral begins search for director of place

Offering a salary of up to £168,000 a year, the newly created role will see the council’s neighbourhoods and regeneration directorates combined.

Wirral Council has begun the hunt for an executive director of place as it enters a “new chapter” under recently appointed chief executive Matthew Bennett following the publication of a report criticising the authority’s approach to regeneration.

The job advert states that the council is looking for someone with a “strong track record of delivering place-based change at scale, who brings energy and ambition and a clear vision of what success looks like”.

The successful applicant will be responsible for role will cover council areas of planning and building control, housing, regeneration and major projects, place making and economic growth, asset management, transport, highways and infrastructure, road safety, transport, neighbourhood safety, climate change, customer service and engagement, leisure and libraries, parks and environment, and major events.

Wirral Council agreed to scrap the previous director of regeneration position earlier this year having seen a conveyor belt of post-holders come and go over the past five years.

The last long-term director of regeneration at Wirral Council was Alan Evans, who served for eight years before joining Homes England in 2022.

Evans was initially replaced by Sally Shah on an interim basis, before David Hughes stepped up on a permanent basis.

Hughes subsequently left for London and was replaced by Marc Cole, whose departure after three months due to ‘ill-health’ opened the door for Marcus Shaw, the most recent incumbent.

Another job for WMBC , who will be paid more than the prime minister, who will last for 12 months then be replaced, because WMBC don’t have a clue what growth and regeneration looks like if it bit them in the face. Look at the state of the 19M spent on the road outside the market !! Pathetic waste of money.
