Grosvenor committed to Chester hotel after RAAC-enforced closure

The landlord of the grade two-listed Eastgate Street venue said it stands ready to invest in the asset after operator Bespoke Hotels announced plans to close it later this year.

In a statement shared with local media, Bespoke said the cost and complexity of remediating potentially unstable reinforced autoclave aerated concrete found above the five-star Chester Grosvenor Hotel’s function suites had resulted in the decision to wind up operations by the end of September.

Located at the heart of Chester’s historic core next to the Eastgate Clock, the hotel was constructed in the 1860s and features 79 bedrooms and suites, two restaurants, and a spa.

Responding Bespoke’s decision to close the hotel, Grosvenor, which owns the building, said its priority was ensuring its “long-term future…given its importance to Chester”.

The statement added: “As an organisation steeped in the history of city and that is deeply committed to its long-term success, we are developing plans for a major refurbishment supported by significant investment and the appointment of a new operator.

“The refurbishment will protect the future of Cheshire’s only five-star large hotel, strengthening Chester’s tourism and hospitality economy.”

Huge blow to the city centre – hopefully the estate invest some money and fix it; dodgy 60s concrete must run through the entire shopping centre behind the hotel, it’ll be interesting to see how much of it they need to pull down to fix the situation. Poor old Harrod’s opening their shop just as the nice hotel next door gets closed down !

If afternoon tea experienced at the Grosvenor recently is indicative of the hotels luxury credentials… then im not surprised its closing. If you want a decent afternoon tea you would be far better off at The Grosvenor Garden Centre!!
