Govt announces intent to build new nuclear plant

Cumbria and Anglesey are reportedly regarded as lead contenders for a large-scale power plant along the lines of Sizewell in Suffolk.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak unveiled on Wednesday a roadmap to quadruple the amount of UK nuclear power produced by 2050.

“Nuclear is the perfect antidote to the energy challenges facing Britain – it’s green, cheaper in the long term and will ensure the UK’s energy security for the long term,” Sunak said.

“This is the right long-term decision and is the next step in our commitment to nuclear power, which puts us on course to achieve net zero by 2050 in a measured and sustainable way.”

Among the plans include a commitment to invest up to £300m to produce HALEU, a fuel that is used to power nuclear reactors. Historically, HALEU has only been commercially made in Russia.

Under the government’s roadmap, HALEU would be produced at Springfields in Lancashire, with a plant set to be operational in the early 2030s.

A new large-scale nuclear power plant is also promised, with the BBC reporting that Wylfa in Anglesey and Moorside in Cumbria are tipped to secure the project.

Totally agree. I thought when labour were elected in 1997 they would announce a batch of new nuclear stations. These would have been up and running now and we wouldn’t be so dependent on others for power supplies.

Has to be Anglesey. Not much employment on the island. This will be a game changer for the locals

Get it up!

ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIED!! Surely we ALL know that these “power plants” are time bombs, waiting to explode and cause widespread devastation – NO exaggeration!!
Rishi Sunak, and his destructive Government, are wrongly assuming the British electorate are as dimwitted as themselves! And what use is any “power” without safety to human and indeed any life forms?! 🤔
This is just another example of this Government’s idiotic and devastating attempt to further destroy what was a beautiful Country.
And NOT in our backyard Mr Sunak…build YOUR terrifying monstrosity in YOUR own neighbourhood; or how about in YOUR own billionnaire back garden??!! 🤔

Where’s my comments gone?? Are you only printing those in favour if this horrifying proposal for another nuclear plant??? Build the terrifying monstrosity in the South for a change!
L36 5XY Better still, stick the money-spinning, soul destroying, horrifying idea where the sun never shines!!

Great news.

We should be building 20 new small nuclear reactors that run 24/7 and never weather dependent- we can then get rid of the hideously expensive and damaging wind turbines
