Woodside Ferry Terminal in line for refresh
If approved by Wirral Council, the 1.6-acre Woodside Culture Park will form a gateway from Woodside Ferry Terminal to Hamilton Square and Birkenhead town centre.
The car park in front of Woodside Ferry Terminal would be transformed into an urban parkland and plaza that would double as an events space suitable for a range of community uses.
A playground built on top of a filled in slipway to the north of the site would provide bespoke play elements tied to the theme of the Battle of Atlantic museum.
Wirral Council has identified Birkenhead’s waterfront as a key area for regeneration within the Woodside masterplan, Birkenhead regeneration framework, and the local plan.
Landscape architect BCA Landscape has designed the plans for the park and plaza.

A planning statement submitted by Hive Land & Planning states the goal of the application is to contribute to a cohesive space for members of the public and improve connectivity within the area.
The application seeks to contribute to Wirral’s ongoing regeneration, with key schemes such as Hind Street, where a two-year remediation program to pave the way for more than 600 homes just south of Woodside Ferry Terminal is underway.
Woodside Ferry Terminal itself is undergoing a £9m makeover, preparing to host the upgraded Mersey Ferry service.

The team for Woodside Cultural Park includes Pell Frischmann, CuraTerrae, 4way Consulting, DW Windsor, and Lanpro.
Further consultation is expected in the coming weeks relating to traffic and highways.
A planning application can be viewed by using the reference number DPP4/25/00382 on Wirral Council’s planning portal.
Sounds good, but will there be any parking provision, as this is still needed for people using the ferry.

Every thought of renaming it “Birkenhead Ferry Terminal”? Just a thought.

Was hoping to hear about some residential as well , as this location needs some vitality and footfall and some high density living. In the evening the place is deserted and very quiet, could do with some bars and cafes too, which should all add to the desire to commute via the ferry, so how about some joined up thinking here.

What a bloody shame the blinkered fools at Wirral Borough Council have just destroyed the heritage tramway at Woodside which had the potential to be a major tourist initiative between the world famous Mersey Ferry service and Hamilton Square. The historic trams have been reolcated to Derbyshire and 245 returned to Liverpool Museums. The volunteers who created the potential have been disbanded and we have yet another example of a Council who know the price of everything and the value of nothing!. Wirral is a bloody disgrace and no amount of puffery and word salad will chnage that!

I will believe it when I see it. Wirral Council love their grand plans and CGI images but nothing ever comes into fruition. Sadly Woodside was closed off years ago then then the last nail in the coffin was the usual yobs setting fire to the market sheds.
Unless something is done about the antisocial behaviour in the area nothing will work, same for the grand plans to open the old dock railway route, one that’s currently covered in litter and used as a tip.

By a remarkable coincidence, this new wonder development is to be opened on the very same day that I will open the batting in an Old Trafford Test Match!
