Cumberland defies officers in approving housing plan

A 33-home scheme on the outskirts of Carlisle was given consent by the authority’s planning committee in a rare example of members ignoring advice to vote in favour of development.

Landowner James Anderson Young was seeking hybrid consent for up to 33 self-build houses on 9.5 acres at Knockupworth Farm of Burgh Road.

Cumberland Council’s planning team had given the committee an easy out when it came to determining the application, saying the scheme would be an “unacceptable intrusion into the open countryside”.

However, the planning committee members disagreed, voting unanimously to approve the application, citing unmet demand for housing in the area.

Tetra Tech advised the applicant on the scheme.
