Timeframe set for central Workington’s £13m upgrade

Cumberland Council is asking residents to share their thoughts on two proposals, the Workington Town Centre Public Realm and Connectivity Project and the Workington Gateway Project.

After winning £33m in central government funding, Cumberland Council is seeking to use the cash to enhance Workington’s public realm, improve transport links, and support economic growth.

The council is targeting local manufacturing and clean energy sectors in addition to encouraging entrepreneurship and local business.

A public drop-in at Workington Market will take place on 20 August from 10am to 4pm.

A meet the contractor event will be held on 28 August at the Carnegie Theatre from 2pm to 6:30pm.

Using £10.6m from central government, the council will focus on improving transport routes in order to unlock further growth for the town.

Story Contracting has been appointed to deliver the gateway scheme.

Central to the project are upgrades to Ramsay Brow and Hall Brow, with an emphasis on reducing congestion and widening pedestrian and cycle access.

Ramsay Brow and Hall Brow are two central roads leading into the town centre.

Work, and therefore disruption on Ramsay Brow, is set to commence on 24 September. Full completion is due by March 2026.

The creation of a pocket park to replace the existing Henry’s pub site with an improved public realm, seating, and landscaped area is also a part of the project.

In addition, Hall Park’s walled garden will get an upgrade with a café and sports facilities – this application was submitted in January this year.

Work at Hall Park is to run from January 2026 to April 2026.

Workington Town Centre Public Realm and Connectivity Project

Using £3m funded through the Workington Town Deal, Workington’s centre is to be transformed into a welcoming and pedestrian-friendly area.

The intention is to increase footfall and subsequently private investment in the town centre.

Thomas Armstrong, the chosen contractor, is due to start construction on Murray Road on 1 September.

Cllr Mark Fryer, Leader of Cumberland Council, said: “This is an exciting new chapter for Workington.

“These projects are not just about improving roads, buildings, and public spaces – they are about creating opportunities, attracting investment, and making our town an even better place to live, work, and visit.”

He added the council’s commitment to engaging with residents and encouraged attendance at the planned drop-in sessions.

Under the £33m fund, improved sports facilities in the form of the £10.5m Cumberland Sports Village are also planned.
