Construction partner wanted for £10.6m Workington Gateway project

Cumberland Council is searching for a contractor to carry out road alterations to allow easier access for HGVs and improvements to active travel.

The project duration is estimated at 14 months, with the deadline for application on 11 October.

The work programme includes realigning and widening the A66 Ramsay Brow and A596 junction to facilitate HGV movement to the employment and distribution sites across the north of Workington.

The addition of toucan crossings, formal permit-holder parking, footways, and cycle infrastructure are required along the A596 eastern footway.

The creation of a pocket park to replace the existing Henry’s pub site with an improved public realm, seating, and landscaped area is also a part of the project.

Delivery of the plans will occur in two stages and the total value of the contracts is around £4m.

Stage one covers the design and production of the project.

Stage two is the undertaking of the construction of the contract.

The estimated total value of the stage one contract is £190,000.

The estimated total value of the stage two contract is £3.6m.

Both of these estimates are excluding VAT.

For the avoidance of doubt, the initial contract will be for the provision of stage one works only.

The wider £10.6m Workington Gateway project is designed to open up the north of Workington to greater economic activity, improving access from major industrial sites to the Port of Workington.

The council aims to increase the efficiency of the industrial sites with well-designed HGV access, while also enhancing the cultural offer and visitor experience of the town.

Hall Park’s walled garden will get an upgrade with the creation of a new café and training facilities – this application was submitted in January this year.

In addition, improved walking routes through Hall Park and permanent lighting will be installed at Workington Hall.
