Blackpool approves 243,000 sq ft airport sheds plan

The council has granted itself planning permission for eight units within the town’s enterprise zone. 

Blackpool Council submitted reserved matters plans for the 243,000 sq ft scheme last year having already secured outline permission for the employment development plus a new link road called Vickers Way connecting Common Edge Road with Amy Johnson Way. 

The plans, submitted on behalf of the council by Cassidy + Ashton, are for seven industrial units ranging in size from 12,500 sq ft to 72,000 sq ft and a 4,000 sq ft retail unit. 

Part of the site earmarked for the units use to be home to sports pitches, which have been relocated to a 35-acre sports village south of Common Edge Road as part of the first phase of the enterprise zone project. 

The council will have two years to get on site after the approval of plans before the permission expires.

Blackpool Council is seeking expressions of interest from developers for the plots on which the units would be built. In total these plots provide 26 acres of developable land.

The less fit the airport is kept to operate commercial air routes the greater will be the regret, very soon, at a golden economic opportunity lost; Just like now having shut and lost all those “useless” railway lines. Sheffield-Doncaster airport is re-opening.

An airport is only a golden economic opportunity if people fly in invest and spend their money there, not out on their holidays to spend their cash elsewhere. I don’t think Blackpool has that draw hence its current status. Liverpool and Manchester airports are less than an hour away for people travelling into the NW. I think Blackpool is doing the right thing and creating alternative regeneration/investment opportunities for the site.
