Wynne appointed for £12.5m North Wales archives project

The construction firm has been appointed to deliver a facility next to Mold’s Theatre Clwyd that will host North East Wales’ written and pictorial history.

Wynne Construction has been selected by Flintshire County Council as the contractor for the £12.5m scheme and a planning application is expected to be submitted this year.

Chris Wynne, managing director at Wynne Construction, said: “We are delighted to have been appointed to deliver this transformative project.

“We look forward to working in partnership with both Denbighshire and Flintshire councils to create a development that supports growth, sustainability and community wellbeing.”

Subject to approval and securing additional funding, construction of the Raikes Lane development could begin next year and conclude by autumn 2028.

The scheme, which will consolidate Denbighshire Archives in Ruthin and the Flintshire Record Office in Hawarden under one roof, has already received a significant chunk of funding in the shape of a £7.3m National Lottery grant.

The aim of this project is to “establish a stronger, more resilient and sustainable archive service for the region with a new archive building”, according to a press release prepared by Denbighshire County Council, which is supporting Flintshire on the project.

Councillor Emrys Wynne, lead member for Welsh language, culture and heritage, said: “This is a major step forward for the project and for the wider community.

“Wynne Construction brings a strong track record of delivering high‑quality developments, and we are confident they will help us realise our ambitions for this project. This scheme will deliver long‑term benefits for residents, businesses and visitors, and we are pleased to be moving into the next stage.”
