Stockport confirms likely new use for historic library
The grade two-listed Carnegie-funded asset on Wellington Road is set to be the new home for the council’s music service.
Currently located in Bredbury, the service could move to the former Stockport Central Library, whose future has been the subject of much local interest since the library was relocated to Stockroom.
There were concerns among residents and councillors when the council first announced that Central Library would close amid dwindling user numbers about what the building would be used for.
The council was quick to quash speculation the asset would be sold or demolished, stating that it would likely be the future home of another of its services.
In 2021, Stockport put forward a list of potential future uses including:
- Relocation of the Adult Education Service from Hardman Street
- Provision of a new primary healthcare facility for the town centre
- Provision of a new community enterprise space in the town centre
- Provision of a co-working/shared workspace
- Relocation of the Coroner’s Court from Mount Tabor
Now, the authority has confirmed that its music service, which is an education service, wis the most likely candidate to move into the town centre building following months of talks, bringing the library back into use after its closure in May 2025.
