Stalybridge public realm work kicks off

Work at Armentieres Square and Trinity Street are phases one and two of a package of projects aimed at improving the town’s public spaces.

At Armentieres Square, work has begun today to dig up and replace the existing surfacing and install new lighting. The square will be closed off for the next seven days, Tameside Council said.

From next Monday, traffic will move one way -northbound only – through Trinity Street and Armentieres Square to facilitate the delivery of the scheme.

Future phases include work to upgrade Market Street, Grosvenor Square, Corporation Street, and Old Town Hall Gardens.

Cllr Andrew McLaren, deputy leader and executive member for growth, housing and homelessness, said: “This work is important for Stalybridge. These improvements reflect what residents, businesses and community groups have told us they want to see, a town centre that feels safer, greener, and more vibrant.

“We know there will be some disruption while the work takes place, but the end result will help revitalise the heart of Stalybridge and support its long‑term future. We’re grateful to everyone for their patience and cooperation as these changes get underway and we will be working hard to minimise the disruption.”

Tameside Council has worked with various consultants on its vision for Stalybridge including TODD Architects, LDA Design, Civic, AshtonHale, and Corstorphine & Wright.

Ultimately, the authority plans to appoint a development partner for the residential phases of the Stalybridge masterplan. These could see 400 homes built on various council-owned sites in the town centre.

Bankfoot APAM is leading on the delivery of the first 102 homes in the west of the town for Greater Manchester Pension Fund, which owns the land on land between Stalybridge train and bus stations.

The overarching vision for Stalybridge is backed by £19.9m of government funding to upgrade public realm and connectivity, improve accessibility to the Astley Cheetham Library and Museum, and repair to the town hall.

Another mess and waste of money. Look at market street what a balls up

I am a resident of Stalybridge (70yrs) and a high % of this work has already been done. Culverting of canal after Delta Cables demolished etc etc. TMBC really don’t know how to waste as much Council Tax payers money as they can. My est is that £Ms have been wasted on consultants fees so they can tell them what they already know! I was employed at DCC for 28yrs & seen this waste 1st hand; whilst objecting to Cllrs without them understanding what was said. This completed project in Stalybridge may well look good but the final costing will be outrageous & no doubt will not be published to the wider public! These Cllrs are displaying their amateur approach to financial management. CIPFA would go along with their approach which again is wrong! We’ll see at the completion of this project!

Unless the council gets rid of the Canada geese that infest the canal area this is unlikely to be as successful as hoped. The geese, which are classed as vermin, produce a huge amount of unhygenic droppings per day. How can we have a beautiful town centre with them there?

Stop moaning

If by “dig up and replace the existing surfacing “ they mean the brick paving that has nothing at all wrong with it, I think they should be made to explain this ridiculous waste of money. The existing paving was a replacement for the original (2001) brick paving which rapidly deteriorated as it was unsuitable and started to lose its surface. It was replaced by the present high quality Blockleys Bricks which after 20 years show no sign of wear! Total waste of money for another failure on the scale of the laughable Market St “improvement “which caused so much upheaval recently.

Vote Reform

Just for information Canada geese are not classed as vermin and are protected under and bring joy to the folks who would not normally get so close to our much depleted wildlife . If your looking for detritus look no further than where the canal culvers under Mottram road plenty of discarded rubbish there . As far as the rebuild includes a multi storey car park and replacement of riverside walk jury’s firmly out . Not been impressed so far

Thought Market Street had recently completed a new road, I am sure money could be well spent elsewhere. Armentieries Sq already looks good.

Canada geese are considered a significant nuisance or pest species due to their non-native status, aggression, and high volume of droppings. Licensed control measures (e.g., egg oiling, culling) are permitted to manage issues.

Vote anyone but Reform

By Josh 2

Josh probably wants to have a look at Reform councils elsewhere before posting on behalf of Nigel’s bank account.

There’s not a Canada Goose on earth that has ever ‘brought joy’ to a farmer out here in West Lancashire. They can decimate winter crops and early seedlings and many’s a farmer who calls on mates to help cull them when they make landfall.
