Rock Ferry site damaged by fire

The grade two-listed Ravenswood House, which sits within a 20-acre site due to be developed into 200 homes by Torus, will have to undergo “urgent” stabilising works after a blaze, according to Wirral Council.

The council said that around 20% of the building had been damaged during the fire, which broke out on Sunday night.

Four fire engines were called to the scene to tackle the blaze. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Ravenswood House, listed in 2012, is the only building left standing on the site of the former Rock Ferry High School, which was demolished in 2016. The building is due to be converted into eight extra care apartments as part of a scheme by developer Torus.

Approval for the £25m residential project was granted in February after Torus acquired the land from the council for £2m in January. On Monday Place North West revealed that Anwyl had been confirmed as lead contractor for the scheme.

A statement from Wirral Council said: “The council has undertaken a full structural survey on Ravenswood House this week [following the fire]. The survey recommends some urgent initial works to secure the damaged area and this will be carried out in the next two to four weeks.

“Every indication suggests that the much-needed housing and extra care developments will still go ahead as planned, and Ravenswood House remains a part of this plan.”

Torus and Anwyl declined to comment, and planning consultant Mosaic Town Planning has been contacted for comment.
