Phil Mayall discusses Salford Central, a multi-billion-pound project he has dedicated much of his professional life to, and Kings Cross – an exemplar of how to get regeneration right.

His dream scheme is the potential transformation of an area of Blackpool that is among the most deprived parts of the country – a project that could make a real difference.

“We could get this so right,” he said. “It is about good quality design that can have an impact on people’s lives.”

Scheming is a Place North podcast series that provides some of the biggest names in property the chance to talk about three schemes they think about a lot:

  • The one they are most proud of
  • The one that got away
  • Their dream scheme

As well as discussing his three schemes, Mayall talked about why exercise – specifically triathlons – has proven crucial during his career and how to balance the desire to run, ride, or swim with the demands of the day job.

“The natural thing is that you take on a new role and that becomes all-consuming and exercise takes a back seat. But you quickly learn that you are not performing to your best at work because you’re not in the right place [physically].

“You need to get over the temptation to get consumed by work too much and recognise performance is a wider thing.”
