Plans for £250m Therme resort approved

Therme Group’s plans for a 700,000 sq ft wellbeing resort at Trafford Park have been unanimously approved by councillors, with work expected to start on site in 2021.

The project, which is targeted to open to the public in 2023, is being brought forward after the local council approved a string of relocations of other properties in Trafford Park last month to make way for the resort.

Under the plans, Therme Manchester is to occupy the 28-acre site currently occupied by EventCity, which will relocate to the nearby Soccer Dome, while Soccer Dome’s tenant, Fives Soccer Centre, is moving to a site close to Chill Factore.

The resort will contain a two-acre wellbeing garden and a large family zone with a wave pool, waterslides, indoor and outdoor pools and steam rooms, which is all expected to attract up to two million visitors per year.

A dedicated adults’ area will feature warm-water lagoons set within a backdrop of botanical gardens, swim-up bars and therapeutic mineral baths.

A 43,000 sq ft public square and 38,000 sq ft lake are also lined up for the resort, which is set to benefit from the Trafford Park Metrolink line that opens next month.

Therme Manchester occupies a site on Barton Dock Road, between Phoenix Way, Mercury Way and the Bridgewater Canal, opposite the Intu Trafford Centre.

The project is being developed in partnership with Peel L&P, with WSP Indigo acting as planner. Other members of the project team include Exterior Architecture, TTHC and BWB Consulting.

Stelian Iacob, chief executive of Therme Group UK, said the resort will “transform life for city residents and people further afield, creating a fun and accessible experience with profound health and wellbeing benefits for all.”

James Whittaker, Peel L&P Group development director, added: “The creation of Therme Manchester will bring an accessible, yet world-class, health and wellbeing attraction to the people of Greater Manchester and beyond, and be a key contributor to the Northern Powerhouse.”

Therme has resorts in Germany and Romania and is working on other projects in China, Southeast Asia and North America.
