The relocation of EventCity in Trafford to the nearby Soccer Dome has been approved, allowing the events venue move to a 240,000 sq ft building, and vacate its site to make way for the £175m Therme resort.
EventCity is a conference and exhibition centre, based to the south-east of Barton Square.
The new EventCity would aim to be more flexible than its current home, allowing areas to be divided off with acoustic walls, so multiple events can take place. The venue will contain a central foyer with breakout space and a reconfigured entrance. Bate & Taylor is the architect.
Due to open 2021, the existing EventCity would remain operational until then.
Plans were revealed by Peel L&P last year to relocate the venue to the nearby Soccer Dome site, in order to build a 28-acre Therme Resort, set to include a 700,000 sq ft resort building, a 43,000 sq ft public square, a 38,000 sq ft lake and up to 1,500 car parking spaces.
A planning application for Therme was submitted in November and is yet to be considered. The tropical-themed, warm water resort is due to open by early 2022, and is being developed by Therme in partnership with Peel L&P. Therme is advised by WSP | Indigo and Exterior Architects.
Neil Lees, acting chief executive at EventCity and deputy chairman of the Peel Group said: “We’re thrilled to have gained approval so work can commence on the new EventCity. The venue will be a fantastic addition to the TraffordCity offering, creating even more reasons for people to visit and experience the ever-evolving area.”
The relocation of EventCity was approved at Trafford Council’s planning committee yesterday, where proposals to rebuild the Fives Soccer Centre, which occupied Soccer Dome, on a site next to Chill Factore were also signed off.
TTHC advised EventCity.
