Rochdale makes Murphy chief executive

After serving as interim chief executive for the past seven months, Julie Murphy has formally taken on the role.

Murphy was appointed chief executive of Rochdale Council on Thursday. She has more than 30 years of experience in local government, including 24 at Rochdale Council. She first joined the local authority as a finance manager, moving up the ranks to director of corporate services prior to taking on the interim chief executive post after the resignation of James Binks last year.

Binks had been chief executive for less than a year before handing in his notice after an investigation into his conduct during his time working at Manchester City Council. He had taken the Rochdale chief executive position from Steve Rumbelow, who had retired.

Murphy said she was honoured to become chief executive.

“Having spent much of my career serving the borough, I am incredibly proud to take on this role,” she said. “Rochdale has passionate communities, dedicated staff and ambitious plans for the future.

“I would like to thank councillors for the confidence they have placed in me. I look forward to working with colleagues, elected members, partners and residents to build on our achievements and ensure we continue to deliver the best possible outcomes for the people and places of Rochdale borough.”

Rochdale Council Leader Cllr Neil Emmott praised Murphy, saying “Julie has demonstrated outstanding leadership, professionalism and commitment throughout her career and particularly during her time as interim chief executive.

“She has a deep understanding of our borough, our communities, and our ambitions for the future,” he continued.

“Julie’s experience, expertise and collaborative approach make her exceptionally well placed to lead the organisation as we continue to deliver for residents, drive regeneration and support inclusive growth across the borough.”
