Lidl sets out intentions for Liverpool’s Taskers site
The supermarket chain will build a store with a 15,000 sq ft sales area on part of the Edge Hill site, leaving a section of the 4.7-acre plot free for other uses.
Place North West revealed last week that Lidl had acquired the former Taskers site on Wavertree Road. Now, the company has launched a consultation on its plans to redevelop the plot.
Like in Croxteth, where Lidl plans to build a store off Storrington Lane on part of the former Croxteth Community Fire Station site, Lidl will only require a portion of the Taskers land to build its supermarket and adjoining 135-space car park.
The rest of the land will be sold on to a developer for other uses.
That could mean laboratory space. When the site was put up for sale last year, selling agent CBRE said that, given its location close to the emerging Paddington Village life sciences campus, it would lend itself for use as labs.
Housing could also be an option; CBRE cited a shortage of new-build housing in the area.
Stuart Jardine, regional head of property at Lidl GB, said: “We’re continuing to create Lidl fans across Liverpool, and are excited to confirm our plans to bring our newest store to Edge Hill.
“We know demand is high for us to bring a Lidl store to serve the community here, and want as many residents as possible to send us their thoughts.
“Whilst a planning application is in the process of being submitted to Liverpool City Council, community feedback will help shape the plans as we work our way through the planning process. If approved, this state-of-the-art store will create jobs, breathe life into an underutilised piece of land, and enhance local access to our quality, affordable offering.”
