GMCA signs off MDCs for Oldham, Bolton, Rochdale, and Tameside

Following the success of Stockport’s mayoral development corporation, Greater Manchester Combined Authority gave the go-ahead on Friday for four more to turbocharge regeneration across the north of the city region.

Here is a breakdown of GMCA’s newest MDCs.

Oldham town centre

Area: c.2,000 acres

Boundaries: Broadway to the north, Higginshaw Road to the east, Park Bridge Road to the south, and Oldham Way to the west.

Major projects: The £70m SportsTown – the redevelopment of land around Oldham Athletic’s Boundary Park into a sporting hub

What will Oldham MDC deliver: 2,000 homes across six sites and a new sporting hub for the city region.

Bolton town centre

Area: c.340 acres

Boundaries: Topp Way to the north, Orlando Street to the south, St Peter’s Way to the east, and College Street to the west

Major projects: The redevelopment of Crompton Place into a £200m mixed-use scheme.

What Bolton MDC will deliver: 2,000 homes, 333,000 sq ft of employment space, 300 hotel beds and serviced apartments, 150,000 sq ft of food and beverage floorspace.

Middleton town centre

Area: c.200 acres

Boundaries: Parkfield Drive to the west, Mellalieu Street to the north, the Caldervale railway line to the east, Wince Brook to the south.

Major projects: The redevelopment of Warwick Mill 

What Middleton MDC will deliver: 1,500 homes, a stronger town centre commercial and leisure offer, improved public spaces.

Ashton and Stalybridge

Area: c.800 acres

Boundaries: Wren Close to the west, Stocks Lane to the east, Park Road to the south, and Lordsfields Avenue to the North.

Major projects: The redevelopment of Ladysmith Shopping Centre, which Tameside Council acquired earlier this year.

What Ashton and Stalybridge MDC will deliver: 3,000 homes and employment space underpinned by enhanced transport connectivity.
