GALLERY | Hindu Temple proposed in Oldham
Plans have been submitted to Oldham Council for a new-build Hindu Temple on Copster Hill Road, a replacement for the Shree Swaminarayan Mandir on Lee Street.
LTS Architects designed the project, which includes the temple, neighbouring function hall, teaching areas, priest’s accommodation, and parking with landscaped gardens. Urban Green is the landscape architect.
Oldham’s Mandir has been open since 1977 in a refurbished former Baptist Church, and was one of the first Hindu temples in the UK.
According to the planning application, the Lee Street facility is no longer fit for purpose, as it has limited parking, no dining facilities, and poor levels of daylight.
The new temple is proposed for the former First Choice Homes Depot, a 51,000 sq ft cleared site within in an area made up of private residential and light industrial uses. The plot is also near to a Church and a Mosque.
The planning application has been submitted on behalf of the Shree Swaminarayan Mandir by Suresh Gorasia, who is also chief operating officer of developer Allied London.
