Fairhursts’ Richard Sagar dies

The architecture practice’s former managing director Richard Sagar died earlier this week aged 69 after being diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer, the company has confirmed.

Sagar joined Fairhursts as a trainee in 1972 and became managing director in 2014. He moved into a part-time consultancy role in 2021 and retired last year.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our colleague and friend, Richard Sagar,” a company statement said.

The news of Sagar’s passing will come as a shock to many who knew him and those who worked with him over his 50-year tenure at Fairhursts on projects including the 120,000 sq ft Materials Innovation Factory in Liverpool.

“Richard leaves behind a significant built legacy across the North West and the UK, working on projects that reflected his passion for science, manufacturing and innovation,” the statement said.

“Those who had the privilege of knowing him will, we are sure, agree that he always welcomed you with a warm smile and took the time to listen.”

Sagar leaves behind a wife and three sons.

Fairhursts said that Sagar “cared deeply for everyone” and continued to champion Fairhursts even after his retirement.

“As we come to terms with the shock of his sudden passing, we will all feel his absence profoundly, both current and former Fairhursts’ staff alike. Our thoughts are with Richard’s family during this difficult time.

Funeral arrangements will be published in due course.

Such devastating news. Richard was a true professional and gentleman, friend to many in the industry and a thoroughly decent man. My thoughts are with his family and friends and his colleagues at Fairhursts. I’ll miss him and I know many more who will as well. Rest in peace, Richard.
