David Lloyd secures Wirral Waters green light

The premium health and fitness brand has the go-ahead to develop six acres of Bidston Dock, where it has plans for a 56,000 sq ft complex.

David Lloyd Clubs submitted its proposals in April last year for what is described by Peel Waters as one of the most ambitious projects within its orbit.

Planner Lichfields is working with the leisure business. The application was considered by Wirral’s strategic applications sub-committee last night.

Subject to final preparations, construction is expected to begin later this year.

The club will be located on the Bidston Dock site off Wallasey Bridge Road – an area infilled 20 years ago – and should pave the way for further investment into the local area, Peel said. The facility is expected to create 100 jobs once operational.

Facilities inked in include:

  • A gym with personal training
  • Heated indoor and outdoor swimming pools
  • Kids indoor and outdoor swimming pools
  • Stars swimming and tennis coaching programmes
  • Premium group exercise studios
  • Family facilities including indoor soft play area and DL Kids Club
  • Match-quality tennis, padel, pickleball and badminton facilities
  • Luxury spa retreat with spa garden
  • Clubroom

David Lloyd Clubs said that it has made a commitment to become carbon-neutral by 2030 and “the new club will incorporate the latest in sustainability technology to ensure it operates as efficiently as possible”.

The site’s location is close to the M53, the Mersey Tunnel, and Birkenhead North railway station.

Richard Mawdsley, director of development for Wirral Waters at Peel Waters, said: “The new David Lloyd Club will bring a nationally recognised, premium health and wellbeing brand to Wirral Waters – delivering not only fantastic new facilities, but also significant investment and jobs opportunities for the local community.

“This is also a major milestone in the creation of a new leisure-led, mixed-use destination in the Bidston Moss area. The addition of this facility will help transform the area into a vibrant hub for residents and visitors to enjoy.”

Leader of Wirral Council, Cllr Paula Basnett, added: “This development is a clear vote of confidence in Wirral Waters and in the future of our borough. It will deliver jobs, support long-term growth, and accelerate inward investment.

“Projects like this demonstrate that Wirral is ambitious, competitive, and ready to lead the next phase of regeneration.”

I never understood why the Bidston Dock was filled in . That action caused flooding in the area. The site proposed is next to a public and commercial ‘smelly ‘ tip. You have to wonder about Peel Holdings actions.
