Aldi details £7m Seacombe ambitions
The discount grocer has put forward plans for a ninth store in Wirral, one that would sit on a 1.5-acre lorry park off Birkenhead Road.
Aldi’s planning application comes a month after the conclusion of a consultation exercise for the 19,800 sq ft store in Seacombe. Sitting within Peel Waters’ Wirral Waters scheme, the store would serve the project’s residents, who number more than a thousand, as well as the students at the nearby Wirral Met College and those working nearby.
The store represents a £7m investment in the local economy, according to Aldi.
Designed by The Harris Partnership, the Seacombe Aldi would have a net sales area of 13,200 sq ft and create 40 jobs. Externally, there would be an 84-bay car park, with five disabled spaces and seven parent and child ones. There would also be rapid and fast electric vehicle charging bays and the potential to add a further nine down the line.
Those coming to the store via bicycle will be able to store their cycle on a series of hoops with capacity for 14 bicycles.
If successful in winning over Wirral Council, Aldi said it would aim to start construction on the store within 18 months of securing planning permission.
Wirral Waters development director Richard Mawdsley welcomed Aldi’s proposals for the site.
“Aldi’s plans represent another important milestone in the ongoing transformation of Wirral Waters, and Peel Waters are very pleased to be working with them to bring forward this investment,” Mawdsley said.
“Delivering a successful, sustainable neighbourhood is about more than new homes – it’s about creating places where people can live, work, study and access the services they need day-to-day.”

He continued: “Partnership is central to that vision, and Aldi’s commitment to Wirral Waters reflects the confidence that leading operators have in the scale of opportunity here. As the community continues to grow with residents, students and businesses already established and many more to come, it’s vital that essential amenities are delivered alongside that growth.”
In addition to The Harris Partnership, the project team includes Avison Young, Smeeden Foreman, Redmore Environmental, Bowland Tree Consultancy, Utility Connections, Arbtech, BOX 4 Real Estate, Stantec, Noise Solutions, Sol Environmental, and Cameron Rose Associates.

I’m not sure what the planning constraints are on this site, due to the neighbouring industrial use and port, however it does seem a shame that a dock side location cannot incorporate apartments above. Id love to know when Peel are going to renovate the Central Hydraulic Tower
